Green Woodworking: Outdoor Spoon Carving Workshop – Full Day


This course will introduce you to green wood spoon carving in a relaxed outdoor setting in rural Norfolk. On the day you will explore the 9-acre managed marshland site, source and saw to size your timber, learn safe and accurate techniques on splitting your log, shape your green timber into a blank using carving axes and carve it into a unique spoon with an assortment of carving and hook knives.

Tuition includes:

Selecting your tree and branch from the site
Getting to know the tools for carving and how to use them safely and efficiently
Learning how to split the log safely and accurately
Creating a spoon ‘blank’ with an axe
Designing your spoon
Carving out a spoon bowl and handle using a selection of hand tools
Tips on drying out and finishing the spoon with sandpaper, oils and waxes
Advice on proper tool maintenance

Snacks, teas and coffees will be available on the day.

(Note: Lunch is not provided. Students are responsible for bringing their own packed lunch if desired.)

Please note this is an outdoor, all-weather course. Sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing and layers are strongly recommended. A covered outdoor area will be provided in the event of rain and a fire pit will be lit in colder temperatures.
