9:00am - 5:00pm at par-avion co. HQ
15 Page Road, Sweet Briar Road Industrial Estate, Norwich, NR3 2BX
Seat weaving is a heritage craft skill useful in restoring furniture or creating new seats for chair makers. It is also incredibly relaxing and meditative. Join Monica for a 1-day comprehensive course where you will learn:
- the basics of warp-and-weft style Danish cord seat weaving
- envelope-style weaving with paper cord or a synthetic material
- other weave patterns: herringbone/twill, diamond, square weave
- L-nail layouts / no-nails techniques
- cow-hitch, splicing and finishing knots
- opportunity to bring a project from home to work on
All materials and tools will be provided. You will work on a series of wooden frames that you can take home with you at the end of the course and use as trivets, wall hangings or to use again as further practice. Students are able to bring a chair or stool from home to work on towards the end of the day, however, these are unlikely to be completed before the end of the course (a certain amount of material is available for this free-of-charge, but additional paper cord can be purchased on the day for continuation at home).
A simple lunch (most likely a vegetarian soup and some bread/butter) will be provided but feel free to bring your own. A selection of coffee, teas and biscuits will be available throughout the day. A refrigerator, kettle and microwave are available for use on site.
Suitable for beginners or those who have some basic seat weaving knowledge but would like a refresher, this workshop provides an accessible introduction to the craft of Danish cord seat weaving using locally sourced timber, natural paper cord and professional tools.
- This is an indoor event based in an industrial unit with uneven floors. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring layers as the unit is unheated. The unit has level access for wheelchair users, but toilet facilities are not accessible.
- The minimum recommended age for this is 14+, however, all students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. An accompanying adult does not need to purchase a ticket, but please make note of this at the time of booking. Smaller children (e.g. toddlers & babies) not taking part are asked not to attend as the event takes place in a working wood shop with other hazards present.
